REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
1. Candidates for admission to the courses of studies for the M. Phil. degree must possess a Four year Bachelor (Honours) Degree.
A Three year Bachelor (Honours) Degree and a One year Master Degree
A Two year Bachelor (Honours) Degree and a Two year Master Degree
2. Candidates must obtain at least Second Class/ 50% marks in all the examinations. In case of C.G.P.A candidates must obtain at least 3.5 in a scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4 in all earlier examinations (from S.S.C/ equivalent to graduate/ Post graduate examinations).
Candidates who fulfill the above mentioned requirements should collect the admission form for M.Phil first part from the Acdemic-1 office during the specified advertised dates. While collecting the admission form candidates must show all academic certificates and transcripts. After the form has been properly filled in, it should be submitted to the department/ institute. For admission the candidate must get recommendation from the Academic council.
After getting the recommendation from academic council the candidate submit the form to the provost office of the preferred Hall. After the approval from the Hall the admission form must be submitted to the department/ institute. It is to be noted that candidates can not choose the Hall from where he/ she has obtained bachelor and master degree. In case of candidates having bachelor or master degree from private universities in Bangladesh or any universities abroad they must submit the certificates to the registrar office before collecting the admission form.
A candidate for the MPhil degree will be registered for two academic sessions. The first year of the academic session will be for coursework and the second year is for writing a thesis. However, the registration for aMphil degree could be extended for two years.
COURSES AND CLASS
Mphil courses of all the faculties and institutions are considered as full time/ credit course. Mphil candidates must complete 200 units of theoretical courses (two courses of 100 units or four courses of 50 units) during the first year. Besides, there will be a viva-voce of 100 marks. To pass the examination the candidate must obtain 50% marks at average in the theoretical courses and in viva-voce. If the candidate gets below 30 in any course it will not be counted. If the candidate could not pass any exam he/she may sit for the exam in the next academic session, given that the candidate is re-admitted for the courses.
If the candidate fails in the oral examination he/ she may retake the exam in the next academic session. However, respective departments may arrange another oral examination within three to six months.
If the candidate gets less than 50 marks in any course or oral examination he/ she may retake the exam in the next academic session without being re-admitted and giving only the examination fee as an irregular student.
Candidates serving in any organization including the university shall take leave of absence for at least one year at the time of MPhil course. Provided that this requirement may he relaxed by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Academic Committee of the Department/ Institute concerned in the cases of applicants of the institutions of higher education or research organizations.
A faculty member may supervise 8 candidates at a time (both Mphil and PhD). However, a faculty member may supervise upto ten candidates at a time in case of joint supervision.
An Mphil candidate may work with two supervisors and one of them must be from the concerned department/ institution; and the other supervisor could be from other department from the University or any research organization recognized by the University of Dhaka. However, the main supervisor will be from the concerned department/ institution.
The supervisor must be of the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor with PhD degree.
ADMISSION IN THE 2ND YEAR
The candidates who pass the examination of 1st part of Mphil should get admitted for the 2nd year within one month after the publication of the results. The candidate may get admitted after one month of result publication; however, in that case he/ she must give late fee of one taka per day. It is to be noted that this provision is open for maximum one month. If the candidate does not get himself/ herself admitted in the 2nd year after two months of result publication, late fee of 2000 taka will be charged for admission.
The student who fails to get the pass mark or is unable to appear at the written examination or cannot complete the courses of studies for valid personal reasons may be allowed one more chance to sit for the examination but only in the next academic session on re-admission on the basis of recommendation of the supervisor and the academic committee of the department. However, this provision is open for only one year and for further re-admission the Vice Chancellor of the university may grant permission on the basis of recommendation of the supervisor and the academic committee of the department.
CHANGE OF SUPERVISOR
If aMphil candidate wants to change the supervisor he/ she apply in the prescribed form obtainable from the Acdemic-1 office. The change of supervisor must be endorsed by the academic committee of the concerned department/ institute and faculty. Further, a change of supervisor must also be approved by the Academic Committee/Committee of Advanced Studies and the previous and the expected supervisor must also give his/her written consent.
CHANGE OF TITLE
All changes of the topic of research or title must be approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council. A separate prescribed form obtainable for from the Acdemic-1 office, shall be used for this purpose. The change of title must be endorsed by the academic committee of the concerned department/ institute and faculty.
SUBMISSION OF THESIS AND EXTENSION
A candidate for the MPhil degree shall submit a dissertation on his/her research work at the end of the second year to the Controller of Examinations through his/her Supervisor (s). If the student fails to submit his/her dissertation in due time he/she will apply for extension before the expiry of the time on the recommendation of his/her Supervisor (s) and the Academic Committee of the Department/Institute concerned. The extension must be approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council. A separate prescribed form obtainable for from the Acdemic-1 office, shall be used for this purpose.
If the candidate do not apply for extension before expiry date he/ she must write an application to the Vice Chancellor with recommendation from the supervisor and head of the department/ institute concerned. In such case The VC may consider and grant upto six months of extension as the per the decisions of syndicate meeting of 6/12/2001.
If the candidate can not submit his/ her thesis within three academic years after admission he/ she must pay a late fee of 2000 taka to submit thesis for examination. However, the late fee would be 4000 taka if five years are passed.
Information about the rate of fees can be obtainable from the Accounts Director’s office.
In every academic session a total of 36 scholarships of 3000 taka (monthly) including one scholarship exclusively for the department of history are awarded on the basis merit. However, if the candidate is in service or has been awarded by any other scholarships he/she will not be eligible for the scholarships. The candidates may renew the scholarships for the 2nd year as well, however, if the candidate could not pass the 1st year examination at first attempt the scholarship will not be renewed.
