QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION
The candidate must possess the M.Phil. degree of this university or of a recognized university.
Candidates must possess a Four year Bachelor (Honours) Degree.
Candidates must obtain at least Second Class/ 50% marks in all the examinations. In case of C.G.P.A candidates must obtain at least 3.5 in a scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4 in all earlier examinations (from S.S.C/ equivalent to graduate/ Post graduate examinations).
A Three year Bachelor (Honours) Degree and a One year Master Degree.

Two years teaching/research experience in research organizations or academic institutions approved by the University. Or job experience of at least two years in government/ non-government/ autonomous/ semi-autonomous organization.
Scholars must have demonstrated evidence of research ability in the form of published papers (at least two) in standard academic journals recognized by this university.
A candidate for admission to the PhD degree programme will apply in the prescribed form (obtainable from the office of the Registrar). During collecting the form the candidate must present all the educational certificates. The filled in form must be submitted for consideration to the board of advance studies along with the recommendation of the supervisor(s), academic committee of the department/ institute, PhD sub-committee of the faculty.
The registration for a PhD remains valid for four years. A candidate may submit the thesis after two years. Registration fee must be paid for each year till the thesis is submitted.
For part time PhD programme a candidate will get registration of five years. The candidate may submit the thesis after four years. However, the candidate may submit the thesis after three years if the academic council approves. However, for this the candidate must be recommended by the supervisor(s) and academic committee of the department/ institute concerned.
COURSES AND CLASS
Full time PhD candidates of the faculty of social sciences will have courses for four years and the candidate must enroll the programme with one year leave. They can submit the thesis after two years. Coursework are not mandatory. If the supervisor find necessary he/ she may ask the candidate for mandatory coursework.
TRANSFER FROM MPHIL TO PHD
Provided that an M.Phil student of this university who has successfully completed the first year courses of studies and has passed the M.Phil. Part I Examination he/she may be transferred to the Ph.D. programme on the recommendation, if his/her supervisor (s) certifying satisfactory progress of research work and the Academic Committee of the Department/institute concerned and on approval of the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council.
PhD candidates who are in service (except the faculty members of the University of Dhaka) must enroll the PhD programme taking leave of at least one year. It is to be noted that candidates with Mphil or equivalent degree are not required to take leave from service; however, they must take permission from the employer.
CHANGES OF THE TITLE
Changes of the title must be approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council. A separate prescribed form shall be used for this purpose. The change of title must be endorsed by the academic committee of the concerned department/ institute and faculty.
If the candidate could not submit the thesis before expiry date but if the thesis is near completion he/ she must write an application to the Vice Chancellor with recommendation from the supervisor and head of the department/ institute concerned. In such cases The VC may consider and grant upto six months of extension.
If the validity of total 8 years of registration and re-registration are expired the candidate may apply for registration again. However, this provision is open to the candidates registered before 2007-2008 academic session. To get a new registration after 8 years has been passed from the first registration the candidate must a pay a renewal fee of 5000 taka.
The candidate must submit a progress report to the supervisor every six month. The supervisor will notify the progress to the board of advance studies.
PhD candidates must give a seminar lecture every year in front of the academic committee of the concerned department/ institute. A least two seminar reports must be submitted to the controller of examination along with the thesis and recommendation of the supervisor and academic committee.
In every academic session a total of 5 scholarships of 3000 taka (monthly) are awarded on the basis merit. However, if the candidate is in service or has been awarded by any other scholarships he/she will not be eligible for the scholarships. The candidates may renew the scholarships for the 2nd year as well.
