nthropology is the study of human beings and their culture. It is an important branch of social sciences through academic and applied practices. The Department of Anthropology, University of Dhaka started its academic curriculum under the Faculty of Social Sciences since December 05, 1992. Being started with a limited number of faculties, the class of first batch (session 1992-1993)began from the month of January 1993.
The department has already stepped to its 28thyear of establishment. Now, it has 19 Full time and 02 Part time teachers. Presently, Professor Dr. Farhana Begum is the Chairperson of the department. The department has the facilities of classroom, seminar library, computer lab and internet for the students. Department is offering BSS (Hons.), MSS, M.Phil, and Ph.Ddegrees for the students. Since 1992, more than one thousand students have received Bachelor of Social Science and Master of Social Science degrees. During the same period, 24 students were awarded M.Phil and 23 students were awarded Ph.D degree.
Since its inception, the Department of Anthropology has sought to achieve the highest possible distinction for teaching and scholarly research and has accomplished this by extending boundaries of knowledge in both traditional and new fields in the social sciences. The department has been pivotal in imparting skills among its students who have excelled in many different fields in home and abroad. Faculty members and alumni of the department have played many significant roles as vice-chancellor of university, ambassador,dean, high-rankingcivil servant, teacher in public and private universities, University Grants Commission (UGC) member,and many have led national and international NGOs, private organizations/businesses, banks, etc.
Senior faculties of the department served as visiting professors in foreign universities of Asia and North America. Numerous alumni of the department(more than 100) have achieved higher academic degrees (MA/MSS/MPhil/Ph.D) from foreign universities in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America and many holding academic (teaching/research) positions abroad.
The emphasis in our extra-curricular activities is attested by the fact that a team of debaters from the department won the First Inter-club National Debate Tournament-2007, organized by Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, University of Dhaka, and Nafia-Gazi Inter-department Debate Competition-2010, organized by Dhaka University Debating Society.At present, the department has some regular extra-curricular activities through visual anthropology club, debating club, and study circle. Anthropology department regularly organizes “Society and Culture Lecture Series”.
Department of anthropology not only contributed in teaching and imparting knowledge to the incoming students, but through research has been contributing to effective policy formulations at the national scale. We devote all of our resources and energies to developing strong mission-driven programs of scholarship (research and creative activities) in the acquisition, synthesis, dissemination, and creation of new research knowledge, coupled with the application of knowledge, and the invigoration of undergraduate and graduate education.
